Agroecology: bringing together science, practice and movements for truly sustainable food systems | Workshop 1/3
17.00 — 19.00 | D0.03

Registration necessary: sign up here!

Agroecology is a relatively recent paradigm aiming to foster truly sustainable agricultural and food systems through a holistic and participatory approach. Inspired by ecological and system thinking, it seeks to bring together (i) cutting-edge inter- and trans-disciplinary science based on functional biodiversity, participatory research and knowledge exchange, (ii) advanced agricultural techniques based on judicious use of local natural resources and on the minimization of external inputs, and (iii) novel food systems based on production of high quality, safe, nutritious and affordable local produce, the promotion of short food supply chains and the engagement of multi-actors and of the civil society towards food sovereignty. As such, agroecology is a fully inclusive approach seeking real agri-environmental, economic and social sustainability for all human beings anywhere. The seminar will give a short historical outline of agroecology and will highlight the opportunities it provides for fostering the sustainability of agricultural and food systems through the illustration of approaches, activities and success stories. Lastly, a foresight analysis on the perspectives of agroecology in science, society and policy will be presented.

UN Climate Negotiations | Workshop – only for unibz students
14.00 — 18.00 | F0.03

Places limited to 30 participants: register here!

The Association Viraçao&Jangada (Trento) offers you the chance to build climate change awareness and to experience some of the dynamics that emerge in the UN climate negotiations.

After a brief introduction about the main facts and numbers related to global warming, you will take part to the World Climate Simulation, a role playing exercise of the UN climate change negotiations. This simulation activity is a simplified international climate change negotiations meeting lead by a facilitator playing the role of a UN leader while each participant plays the role of a delegate representing a specific nation, negotiating bloc, or, in some cases, an interest group. Everyone then works together in their respective roles to reach a global agreement that successfully keeps climate change well below 2˚C over preindustrial levels globally. The simulation game is unique in that it uses an interactive computer model to rapidly analyze the results of the mock-negotiations.

During the event participants must face the climate science, engage in the drama and tensions of global politics, test their ambitions against a climate-modeling tool used by actual climate negotiators, and then reflect on how the experience challenges their assumptions about climate action.
